「“夫のいびきは命ある証拠” ブラジル人シャーリーの秘訣」アラサー女子のゆるっと日記in アメリカ #004

不安になったり寂しくなった時、会いたい人、行く場所、皆さんありますか？

ありがたいことに、私が泣きべそをかきながら訪問しても優しく出迎えてくれるお姉ちゃんのような方がいます。

そんな彼女の名前はシャーリー。

私と同世代の２人の子供を持つママであり、妻である彼女。

ブラジル出身の彼女の作るフェイジョン（豆の煮込みとご飯）は最高においしくって。ついついおかわりをしちゃう私。    

ある日彼女と午後から一緒に過ごせる機会があり、私の強い希望でシャーリーの家事をお手伝いしながら

色々とお勉強させていただくことに。

まず驚いたのは、美しすぎるベッドメイキング。

毎日必ず全てのシーツ類を洗濯し、ホテルのベッド顔負けのセッティングをするところ。

どうして毎日するの？と聞いたら、

「だってその方が気持ちいいでしょ？人生の半分はベッドで過ごすんだから、素敵な時間を家族に過ごして欲しいのよ」

とシャーリー。

枕カバーをシャーリーの指示通り整えながら、ちょっといじわるな私はこんな質問も投げかけてみた。

『ねえ、シャーリー。旦那さんっていびきはすごいの？』

なんて失礼な私・・・

なんとなく、シャーリーの口から愚痴がこぼれるのを聞いてみたかった。
すると、なんで知ってるの？と言わんばかりな表情で、

「いびき？そりゃあもうすごいわよ！」と笑いながら言った。

『私も父がすごかったの！眠れないでしょ？しんどくないの？』

と聞くと、信じられない返答が。

「夫のいびき？そりゃあサウンドはすごいけど、私は聞くたびに神様に感謝するの。

彼に息をさせてくれてありがとうって。

だって、いびきが聞こえなくなったら生きていないってことじゃない。私はあっちの世界にいくまで彼のいびきをずっと聞いていたいわ。」

空いた口が塞がらない、とは正にこの状況だ。

１年以上経った今もこの言葉を忘れることができない。

さて、こんな状況でも腹は減るらしい。

枕を抱き抱えていた私のお腹からぐう。と大きな音がした。

心の底から感動しようとも、どうやら人間の食への欲求を抑えることはできないらしい。

シャーリーは慣れた手つきでベッドメイキングを完了させた。

「さぁ、そろそろプールの掃除をしなくっちゃ。シェリー、終わったらご飯にしましょう！」

ちなみに。

泣きべそをかきながらシャーリーの自宅へお邪魔した時に彼女がプレゼントしてくれたピアスの写真を今回ピックしてみました。

#004 ”Husband’s snoring is a proof that he’s alive” The secrets behind lovely Brazilian Mom Shirley.

Where would you go when you feel lonely or miss someone.

Do you have a place to escape?

Thankfully, I have a place to go even when I’m crying my eyes out. 

She is like a big sister to me and she would always welcome me with open arms.

Her name is Shirley.

She is a wife and mother of 2 children that are almost as old as me. 

Her Brazilian dish called Feijoada (boiled beans and rice) is so good that I always go for seconds.

One day, I had an opportunity to spend the afternoon with her and with my strong desire to learn and help, I asked her to do the chores around the house with her. 

First of all, I was just amazed with her bed making skills. 

She would always wash and change all of the bed sheets and pillow covers in the house and set it up better than most hotels.

I had to ask, Why would you change it everyday?  She responded “Wouldn’t it feel better that way?  You spend almost half of your life on your bed, I want my family to spend a lovely time while in bed.” says Shirley.

As I’m changing the pillow covers with her looking over my shoulder, being a mischievous person that I am, I threw her a question in a playful way. “Hey Shirley, does your husband snore badly?”

How rude of me...

I was sort of wanting to hear some bad mouthing out of her.

Then she makes the facial expression of “How do you know?” 

“Snoring?? Yes, it is crazy loud!!” said with a smile.

“My father snored really badly also!  Can you sleep?  Doesn’t it get tiring?” I asked, then she responded with an unbelievable answer.

“My husband’s snoring? Of course it’s very loud, but I thank god every time I hear the sound of his snoring.  Thank you for letting him breathe! If I stopped hearing his snoring, that means he is no longer alive. I want to hear him snore until I leave this world.”

At a loss for words is the exactly the perfect way to describe the situation.

It’s been over a year and I still can’t forget what she said.

I was absolutely speechless, but my stomach doesn’t care.

It lets me know with a loud sound of growl, even with a pillow over my stomach.

I was being absolutely blown away by what she said, but it is almost impossible to suppress the desire to eat for humans.

Shirley finishes up making all of the beds with much experience.

“Ok! We’ve got to clean the pool now!  Let’s eat after we are done Shelly!”

By the way, I chose this picture of the earrings. 

Shirley gave me these earrings when I visited her when I was in tears.
